Testimonials from Previous Award Winners:  Where Are They Now?

Josh Payne, 2016 Award Recipient

“I attended Stanford for undergrad as well as MS (computer science) and MBA. I’m now working at Coframe, a company I started. I’m living now in Silicon Valley (luckily less allergens here).”

Abbie Smith, 2016 Award Recipient

“I went to Texas A&M University and earned my bachelor’s degree in Special Education. I am currently teaching in Lampasas ISD as a middle school autism support teacher, and I love my job! This is my fifth year teaching. Additionally, I am currently in a master’s program through the University of North Texas to continue my education in autism interventions and practices. My hope is to become an Autism Specialist once this degree is completed. The impact that your scholarship had on me was tremendous. It was through that scholarship, along with others and several part-time jobs, that allowed me to graduate college with zero debt. I married my high school sweetheart (also an Aggie grad) and we now have a toddler. We were fortunate to begin our family without the burden of tuition loans because people like you take the time to invest in students and their futures.”

Jasmine Martinez, 2017 Award Recipient

“I attended Texas A&M University- San Antonio and graduated with my Bachelor’s in Science in Fall 2021.  I am currently working for Bexar County Pretrial Services as a team lead as well as the Continuity of Care Officer. I also reside here in Bexar County.”

Mission of TAAIS

The mission of TAAIS is to improve the quality of life of Texans who suffer from allergies, asthma and immunodeficiencies.

Allergy Fellow’s Research Award

The Texas Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Society (TAAIS) is self-funding this  clinical research project for a Texas allergy/immunology fellow trainee to conduct outcomes research on the allergist/immunologist’s impact in the community.

This Award will fund a proposal that addresses the influence of the expert medical care of the allergist/immunologist and how it impacts individual patients’ and/or health systems’ outcomes.  Any diseases treated by the allergist/immunologist may be considered, including allergic rhinitis, asthma, eczema, drug allergy, insect allergy, food allergy, anaphylaxis, and primary and secondary immunodeficiency.

The intent of this research award is to identify the value of the input of an allergist/immunologist, to identify deficiencies in care without this input, and ultimately help to develop strategies to improve patient care.

Award proposals can address the following, but are not limited to:

The impact of consultation of an allergy/immunology specialist on patient outcomes, including adverse events, adherence to therapy, burden of illness, and quantity and quality of life.

Comparison of outcomes of standard of care diagnostic tests (i.e. skin prick testing) and treatment for allergy and immunology patients with non-standard treatment methods.

Descriptive statistics regarding the public’s general knowledge about allergy/immunology and the impact of education and advertising/marketing efforts to improve general knowledge.

Amount of Award: $3,000 – $10,000
